Glass in a balustrade is structural. It is holding people back from a drop, and if it is specified wrongly the failure mode is not cosmetic. The three decisions that matter are glass type, thickness, and how it is held.

Toughened, laminated, or laminated-toughened

Toughened glass is heat-treated so it is several times stronger than ordinary glass. When it does break, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than shards. That is safer than annealed glass, but it means the whole panel disappears at once — which in a balustrade leaves an open edge.

Laminated glass is two or more panes bonded to a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer and the panel holds together and stays roughly in place.

Laminated toughened glass combines both: the strength and break pattern of toughened, with the interlayer holding the broken panel in the opening. For any balustrade protecting a drop, this is the specification to want. It is the difference between a panel that breaks and a panel that vanishes.

How the fixing changes everything

Thickness cannot be chosen independently of support, because the fixing determines how the load travels.

Frameless, base-clamped glass — the panel is structural. All the load goes into the bottom edge and the fixing channel, and the glass must be thick enough to resist bending over its full height. This is the demanding case, and it needs the thickest glass.

Glass with a continuous top handrail — the handrail ties the panels together and shares load along the run. The glass can be thinner than a comparable frameless panel because it is no longer working alone.

Framed or captured glass — supported on two or more edges. The panel spans a shorter distance in bending, and thickness can drop again.

Point-fixed glass — held on spider fittings or bolts. Stress concentrates around each hole, so all holes must be drilled before toughening. Glass cannot be drilled or cut after toughening at all; it will break. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake in glass specification.

What actually drives the thickness

A fabricator sizes glass from the load case, not from a table. The variables are the imposed line load the barrier must resist, which depends on the building's use and whether crowds are expected; the height of the panel; the span between supports; whether there is a top rail; and how the panel is fixed. A domestic villa balcony and a stadium concourse do not get the same glass, even at the same height.

Ask your fabricator to state the load case they have designed to. If they quote a thickness without asking about use and support, they are guessing.

Interlayers are not all the same

Standard PVB interlayer is common and inexpensive but softens as it gets hot, which matters in Riyadh — a panel that relies on its interlayer for post-breakage stiffness performs worse at 50°C than at 20°C. Stiffer ionoplast interlayers hold much more of their strength at temperature and are the better choice for exterior balustrades in this climate. They cost more.

Edges, coatings and heat

One warning specific to hot climates: a panel that is partly shaded and partly in full sun develops thermal stress between the hot and cool areas, which can crack annealed glass. Where shading patterns fall across glass, this needs to be accounted for.
