A main entrance door is the most-used moving part in a building. It gets slammed, it sits in direct sun, and it carries the first impression of the property. Most of what determines whether it still closes properly in ten years is decided before fabrication starts.
Leaf construction
The leaf is the moving panel. A single skin of thin sheet will drum when knocked and distort in the heat. What holds shape is an internal frame with skins on both faces and infill between them.
- Skin thickness — heavier gauge resists denting and stays flat. This is where cheap doors save money and where they fail.
- Internal stiffeners running the height of the leaf prevent the twist that stops a door latching.
- Infill — rock wool or rigid foam. Rock wool adds fire resistance and sound reduction; foam is lighter and insulates slightly better.
An uninsulated steel door in Riyadh becomes uncomfortable to touch by mid-afternoon and radiates heat into the entrance hall. Insulation is not only about temperature; it is what stops the leaf booming like a drum.
The frame matters as much as the leaf
A good leaf in a weak frame still sags. The frame has to be heavy enough not to flex, properly anchored into the structure rather than fixed to plaster, and grouted where the wall allows it. Hinge positions need backing plates, because the entire weight of the leaf concentrates there.
On wide double doors and gates, ask how many hinges are being fitted and what they are rated for. Three is a minimum on a tall leaf; heavy gates want more.
Hardware is where doors fail first
Hinges, locks and closers take the whole load of daily use. Specify hinges suited to the actual leaf weight, not the nominal size. For entrance security, a multi-point lock engaging at several heights spreads force far better than a single central latch and resists levering at the corners.
In dusty conditions, exposed mechanisms need either sealing or accessible servicing. A cylinder that cannot be replaced without cutting the leaf open is a problem waiting to happen.
Gates carry different loads
A swing gate is a cantilever. The longer the leaf, the more leverage on the hinge post, and the more likely the post leans over time. Wider openings often do better as a sliding or bi-fold arrangement than as a single long swing leaf.
If the gate is to be automated, say so before fabrication. Motor selection depends on leaf weight and travel, mounting points have to be built in rather than added later, and the frame needs to take the extra cyclic load. Retrofitting automation to a gate that was not designed for it is usually the more expensive path.
Decorative panels and privacy
Laser-cut panels give pattern and shade without solid weight, and they can be set into a steel leaf or used as a screen in their own right. Two things to decide: whether you want a backing sheet or glass behind the pattern for privacy, and the ratio of cut to solid area, which controls how much you can see through at an angle.

Finish and colour
For an exterior door in full sun, powder coating gives the widest colour range and a durable surface. Darker colours absorb noticeably more heat, which matters on a west-facing entrance. Wood-effect finishes on aluminum and steel have become common because they give the appearance of timber without the movement, cracking and annual maintenance that real timber needs in this climate.
What to include when you ask for a price
Opening size (structural, not leaf), swing direction and handing, single or double, insulated or not, security level, finish and colour, whether automation is wanted, and whether the existing frame stays. Sending a photo of the opening answers more questions than a paragraph.
