Bare steel in Riyadh will not last. Between summer heat, seasonal rain and airborne dust, unprotected mild steel begins to corrode within months. The two mainstream answers are powder coating and hot-dip galvanising, and they solve the problem in fundamentally different ways.

How each one works

Powder coating is a barrier. Dry pigment is applied electrostatically and then cured in an oven, forming a hard plastic skin over the steel. It blocks moisture as long as the skin is intact.

Hot-dip galvanising is chemical. The steel is dipped in molten zinc, which metallurgically bonds to the surface. Zinc corrodes in preference to steel, so even a scratched galvanised surface keeps protecting the metal underneath.

The trade-off in one line

Powder coating looks better; galvanising lasts longer. That is the whole decision in most cases.

Where powder coating wins

  • Appearance. Any RAL colour, in matt, satin, gloss or texture. Galvanising gives you grey.
  • Architectural and visible work — gates, doors, screens, balustrades, anything a client sees up close.
  • Thin and detailed sections. The coating adds very little thickness, so it does not fill fine laser-cut patterns.
  • Interior use, where there is no serious moisture load and the finish is the point.

Where galvanising wins

  • Longevity outdoors. A properly galvanised coating protects for decades with no maintenance.
  • Damage tolerance. Scratches and drilled holes stay protected. A scratch through powder coat starts rusting at the edge and creeps under the film.
  • Structural and hidden steel — platforms, walkways, frames, supports, anything where appearance is secondary to service life.
  • Wet and wash-down environments, including food processing and plant rooms.

Using both: duplex systems

Galvanising first and powder coating over it gives you zinc protection with a colour finish, and the two together last considerably longer than either alone — the coating shields the zinc, and the zinc protects any breach in the coating. It costs more and needs correct surface preparation between the two stages, but for exposed architectural steel that has to look right for twenty years, it is the specification worth paying for.

What affects how long a finish lasts

Surface preparation matters more than the coating itself. Powder applied over mill scale, oil or rust will lift regardless of how good the powder is. Coating thickness, cure temperature and time, and how the part is handled after curing all change the outcome. Edges and welds are where failures start, so they deserve the most attention.

A note on stainless steel

Stainless needs neither treatment. If a part must be maintenance-free, visible and long-lived, specifying stainless from the start is often cheaper over the life of the building than coating mild steel and recoating it later.
