If you're commissioning metalwork for the first time, choosing between carbon steel and stainless steel can feel confusing. Both are excellent materials — they just suit different jobs. Here's a straightforward guide to help you specify with confidence.
The quick answer
Use carbon steel when strength and cost matter most and the part is indoors or will be coated. Use stainless steel when the metal is exposed to moisture, chemicals or needs to stay attractive without painting.
Strength and cost
Carbon steel is strong and economical, which is why it dominates structural work — beams, columns, frames and platforms. Stainless steel costs more per kilogram but adds corrosion resistance and a clean finish that needs no paint.
Corrosion resistance
- Carbon steel will rust if left unprotected, so it's usually galvanised, powder coated or painted.
- Stainless steel resists rust naturally, making it ideal for humid coastal environments and visible architectural features.
Where each is used
In a typical building you might see carbon steel in the hidden structure and stainless steel in the railings, handrails and feature work people actually touch and see.
